Friday Funnies: ListenToLeon

We can't help but admit that we're in a weekend-state-of-mind. Absolutely no work got done at our respective grinds today. So, as we surf the Web keeping up with the Twitterati we love so well we linger on the blogs that make us chuckle. One twitterer/blogger who manages to make us see the humor in any situation is ListenToLeon. His Twitter profile gives him the title of "greatest comedy writer EVER!" Eh, we don't know about that. But he's definitely near the top of our list. And you have to wonder how a seriously smart guy with a serious job got to be so darned witty. Afterall, who had the nerve to ask Oprah Winfrey for 2 mil on Twitter? Who blogged an open letter to President Obama requesting a cabinet position as the Ambassador of Awesome? Who may have accidentally told all of Twitterdom they had a nice arse? Who has a blogroll that rivals our own? We'll take Leon for 200, Alex.

Drunken Negro Face Cookie?

By now, many have you have heard of the controversy of these pastries made by a New York bakery. The bakery's owner, Ted Kefalinos, is sort of apologizing in an attempt to quell the firestorm over his chocolate cookies with red eyes, large lips, and big noses. But that hasn't stopped him from selling his creations and calling them "Drunken Negro Face" cookies in honor of President Barack Obama. Watch the video (while it's still available) and let us know- is too much being made of this?

Apple For Teacher: ProfessorTracey

To stand out as a blogger of culture, you have to really bring something different to the table. You really do. ProfessorTracey manages to do it by discussing current events from her unique perspective- as a thinking Black woman who isn't afraid of controversy and finds the importance in issues many of us gloss over. We knew we wanted to profile the Professor when we read her series called "Women Who Set All Women Back And Refuse To Go Away Chronicles". In our opinion, she also hit the nail square in today's post about Juan Williams. You'll find plenty to sink your teeth into when you follow her blog and tweets.

Seriously Funny: HumanityCritic

These days lots of people on Twitter have thousands of followers, some of them through calculated schemes to puff up their numbers. But there are others, like HumanityCritic, who have thousands of followers because they are genuinely interesting- and interested. On Twitter and on Vibe.com, HumanityCritic delivers commentary on current events, rants on popular culture, and jaw-dropping tales about his (mis)adventures on the dating scene. But he does it all with a dry wit and an air of amusement that makes you feel you're talking to a mischievous older brother, instead of reading a blog. Just try to read his recent post on "beer goggles" without stifling a chuckle.

Bloggy Spice: MaryannReid

Is your Web site or blog lacking that "thing"? That spark? The "Dang!" Factor? The kind of controversy that makes readers dip back day after day even when they disagree with 90% of what you have to say? If your little piece of Web real estate could benefit from something like that, you might want to see what you can pick up from MaryannReid. This published author takes a controversial yet honest stand on nearly every issue facing singles and married folk alike. When she asks an innocent, be ready for a down-and-grimey answer. Is it wrong to be a kept woman? Are engaged men fair game? Are the best men married by age 35? Is love a good reason to get married? Or divorced? More importantly, she does it in her own voice- often sparking dissent, but deep thought too. She's willing to go where most won't and say the things even her supporters are afraid to say in polite company. Maybe that's why she calls herself the Alphanista. Because someone has to run at the head of the pack. No guts, no glory.

Not Sure How To Feel About This, Twitterati

That Social Media Guy: WayneSutton

Not many people use their real first and last names as their Twitter handles. And it's not something we recommend unless you're well-known for what you do, or you're already your own brand. At least one person we know falls into that category: Wayne Sutton. If you want to know more about how to grow your brand or build your following, he's the guy to talk to. His blog and podcast focus on all things "social media"- and beyond. But what sets his work apart is that he has the contacts (and the reach) to give you concrete examples of what works and what is a waste of time. We especially enjoyed this week's post on Crocs. Fashion + Social Media + Marketing = Win, in our book.

Manifest Destiny: The Fab Empire

We were first made aware of TheFabEmpire.com through DCFab, who is one of five bloggers on the Web site. She describes herself as "a writer in a socialite frame of mind". If you've read her posts this week, you've probably noticed that she does a "fabulous" job of describing what it's like to live in the nation's capital-a city that is always handling more than it should, especially days before the Inauguration of the country's first African-American president. But the "citizen journalists" at The Fab Empire also covers all the goings-on in three other major cities: Baltimore, Boston, and New York. We have no doubt the empire will continue to grow. Keep an eye out for these young sisters. They're going places.

Design Intervention: KissMyBlackAds

Who are the up and coming designers in the advertising business? How do advertising firms target specific demographics? Does the world need Black advertising agencies? If you've been following KissMyBlackAds (also known as advertising designer Craig Brimm), you're a lot closer to answering those questions than most people. His blog focuses on marketing to multicultural audiences. It also offers a good bit of eye candy and "ad porn" for anyone in advertising, marketing, journalism, or design. But KissMyBlackAds isn't the only designer in his family. He's married to JewelryRockstar .

What Educated Black Folks Like: JJPolitics

It's easy to see why bloggers of substance sometimes get discouraged these days. Senseless blogs full of senseless topics revolving around senseless celebrities seem to draw massive comments and bookmarks without even trying (or even verifying). But stand firm, interneter! You can cultivate an audience, while blogging about meaningful subjects. You can even have FUN at the same time. The blogging team of JJPolitcs - also known as Jack and Jill Politics - is proof of that. The blog promises a black bourgeois perspective on politics- and it delivers. It also offers flashes of social commentary and an often humorous view of popular culture. Should it be on your blogroll? We think so.

If you're doing any kind of business online, you have no choice but to keep up with certain trends in technology. But it's even more important to put that information in the proper context. JayMoney is on our radar because he does a great job of cutting through the gibberish and boiling down all the tech talk into plain English. On his blog he focuses on popular applications, Web sites, and computer security. On Twitter, he talks shop but also throws in some funny tidbits regarding popular culture.

What the Devil? Twitter Hackers!

This thing has been heating up all weekend with a phishing scam, reaching a fever pitch with other fraud scams this morning. Apparently, dozens of Twitter accounts have been hacked through DMs that ask receivers to click on a link contained in the message. Needless to say, this is not the time to open direct messages from Twitterers you don't know. More information on the Twitter Blog. Here are screenshots of these new Twitter account hacks. Even some unaffected twitterers are changing their passwords as a precaution. Personally, we won't be opening ANY DMs until tomorrow as Twitter gets a handle on this thing. Take it easy out there.

Who's Got The Jazz?: TheJStandard

TheJStandard, also known as Robin Caldwell is a public relations consultant and publicist who knows how to pitch and maintain an image. In other words, when it comes to marketing, she can play both sides of the ball. But that doesn't mean she's spreading herself thin. Quite the contrary. She describes her special niche as "introducing African American clients to a broader market". Find out more about this dynamic twitterer on Twitter and on her blog.
